Hello everyone, I’m Mr. Tan. Previously, we covered shipping costs and delivery times for dropshipping to the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Israel. Today, I’m taking some time to compile an article about dropshipping shipping costs and delivery times to Italy.
Mainly, this is because over the past few days, several e-commerce sellers from Italy have reached out to me to discuss dropshipping business details. One Italian friend I spoke with yesterday left a particularly deep impression on me—he is planning to start an eBay store as a beginner seller. He was very sincere and was genuinely worried that I might look down on him because he is new. In fact, I am very happy to make friends with beginner sellers and grow together; it gives me a great sense of accomplishment.
Getting back to business, today’s article is organized strictly according to the actual situation in Italy.
1. Local Logistics “Unspoken Rules” in Italy
Quite a few sellers assume that once a parcel clears customs in Milan, everything else is basically smooth sailing. In reality, that’s not the case at all. Final-mile delivery in Italy has several localized characteristics. Friends doing e-commerce in the Italian market need to understand the following three points. These are based on MR. TAN’s personal observations and may not be completely exhaustive, so feedback and corrections are always welcome:
- The Obvious “North-South Divide” and Island Deliveries:Italy’s economy and infrastructure follow a “strong North, weaker South” pattern. In northern industrial cities like Milan, Turin, and Bologna, once parcels clear customs and are handed over to local couriers (such as Poste Italiane, BRT, etc.), door-to-door delivery usually takes just 1–2 days. However, in southern regions (like Naples and Puglia), and especially on the two large islands of Sicily and Sardinia, local delivery often takes an extra 2–4 days. Therefore, if you are running an e-commerce business in Italy, be careful not to promise the exact same delivery timeframe to all Italian buyers. You should set different delivery estimates or notices based on the destination address; otherwise, you risk receiving negative reviews due to delays, which does more harm than good.
- The August Nationwide Holiday (Ferragosto):In Italy, mid-August marks the traditional holiday of Ferragosto, during which many local companies, logistics hubs, and customs agencies enter a semi-stagnant state or shut down completely for vacations. Every year in August, parcels shipped to Italy generally experience delays and backlogs during final-mile delivery. This is not an issue caused by our partner logistics companies; virtually all Chinese logistics providers face this situation. Here, MR. TAN is simply reminding sellers targeting the Italian market to pay attention to delivery timeframe changes in August. August has just passed, so there is no need to worry about this right now 🙂 (Publication date of this article: September 2026).
- Strict Address Requirements Down to the Doorbell (CAP Zip Code & Civico Number):This is a lesson learned from issues we encountered previously, and it is a point our logistics service providers specifically emphasized. In Italy, the postal code (CAP), building street number (Civico), and the surname on the intercom doorbell are crucial. They must match; otherwise, the parcel status will show “Delivery Failed.” The primary reason for this issue is that the final-mile courier cannot locate the doorbell with the buyer’s name and is unable to establish contact.
2. International Shipping Costs to Italy
A disclaimer upfront: Quoting a fixed “price per kilogram” in an article is extremely irresponsible. The rise and fall of freight rates are beyond our control and depend on various international factors. Our partner logistics service providers adjust rates periodically based on these factors. As a dropshipping fulfillment provider, we cannot control the direction of freight rates, so I cannot state directly here how much it costs per kilogram to Italy. If someone quotes a static price written a few years ago and you calculate your profit margins based on it, you will most likely lose money.
MR. TAN’s promise to all clients: We take zero markup on international shipping rates. Whatever base price our dedicated freight partners give us, we pass it on to clients at actual cost based on the latest billing statements. If you need to calculate real-time shipping costs for specific products, please contact us directly at your earliest convenience (there is a WhatsApp contact button in the lower right corner of the page).
Actual logistics costs to Italy consist mainly of the following components:
1. Exact Gram-Weight Billing, No Rounding Up to Kilograms
Many traditional freight forwarders round up billing weights to the nearest whole kilogram or 0.5 kg increment (for example, charging 1.1 kg as 2 kg). However, with our dedicated dropshipping lines, billing is based on exact weight in grams. You are charged strictly for the exact grams your package weighs with no rounding up. For example, if your parcel weighs 130 grams, your chargeable weight is 130 grams.
2. Weight Fee + Per-Parcel Registration Fee
Shipping costs consist of the “weight fee” + “registration fee.” The registration fee is charged once per parcel. In practice, to make cost calculations easier for clients, our comprehensive quotes generally include the registration fee upfront, unless there is a special line or unusual situation that requires separate itemization. If you want to know the exact per-kilogram rate and registration fee breakdown, just let us know, and we will send you the latest rates and registration fees for confirmation.
3. EU Member State Customs Fee (€3 per parcel)
A special reminder for all sellers: Effective July 1, 2026, due to the European Union’s customs policy adjustments for cross-border e-commerce small parcels, all logistics channels shipping parcels to EU member states (including Italy) are required to add an extra €3 customs handling fee per parcel. This fee is a fixed, mandatory cost for compliant customs clearance, so you must factor this margin into your product pricing and profits in advance. This money is collected directly by logistics carriers for customs clearance, not by us; we can provide the logistics company’s billing statements for verification.
4. Volumetric Weight Divided by 8000
In international shipping, weight is split into actual parcel weight and volumetric weight. The logistics billing rule is whichever is heavier applies. Standard commercial express couriers (like DHL, FedEx, UPS) typically divide volumetric weight by 5000 or 6000 (Length × Width × Height in cm / 5000). But through our negotiated agreement, our partner logistics company calculates volumetric weight divided by 8000. If your goods are bulky/volumetric items, this calculation method is exceptionally beneficial. For a product of the exact same packaging volume, dividing by 8000 yields a volumetric weight nearly 40% lighter than dividing by 5000, which can save you a significant amount on shipping costs.
5. Free Vacuum Compression for Bulky Items
If you sell clothing, textiles, plush toys, cushions, and similar items, packages are mostly filled with trapped air. For these bulky items, we provide free vacuum compression services. By removing excess air before packing and dispatching, we reduce package volume by 30% to 50%, converting items that would otherwise be billed by volume back to billing by actual weight.
6. Price Difference Between General Cargo and Battery Products
Logistics prices differ depending on whether a product contains batteries (such as button cells or built-in lithium batteries). Battery-operated items must travel through dedicated sensitive cargo channels and clear customs at specific ports, so the shipping rate per unit weight for battery items is slightly higher than for general non-battery goods.
3. Shipping Delivery Times and Dedicated Line Tiers
I must also state in advance that the transit times below may fluctuate over time, as logistics providers face various factors; please refer to the latest updated times. Currently, we mainly introduce the following three lines to Italy. Of course, there are many other routes not listed here, but these are the ones commonly used in the dropshipping industry:
- Economy Line: This line focuses on cost performance and is ideal for running high-volume orders. For regular non-battery products, delivery time is roughly 3–10 days; when flights are smooth, it can arrive within just a few days, which is quite fast. However, if the product contains batteries, because sensitive goods require dedicated sorting channels and designated clearance ports, the overall delivery time will extend to 12–15 days. Therefore, this line is suitable for low-ticket battery products where customers have a slightly higher tolerance for shipping times.
- Standard Line: This is the line MR. TAN recommends most for everyone to use. For both regular non-battery items and battery products, the delivery time is generally around 6–10 days. In terms of both cost-effectiveness and delivery speed, this route is the best fit, and I highly recommend it.
- Italy Express Line: This route is very fast, usually delivering to buyers within 3–7 days. However, the freight cost is quite expensive. Unless you encounter an urgent customer complaint that requires an immediate reshipment, I strongly advise against choosing this express line for standard dropshipping orders—the cost is simply too high unless your product has exceptionally high profit margins.
4. The Key Factor Determining Final Delivery Time: Do You Have “Stock”?
To clarify: for instance, the standard line to Italy mentioned above takes 6–10 days. This 6–10 day timeframe depends on your inventory situation; not all orders can achieve 6–10 days.
In actual fulfillment, delivery time must be strictly split into two parts:
- Warehouse In Stock:If your inventory is stored in advance at my warehouse, once your store receives an order, our system syncs order printing, quality inspection, labeling, and packing. It can be handed over to the carrier for transport on the same day or the next day. In this case, the delivery time your buyer experiences is purely the dedicated logistics transit time mentioned above.
- Zero Inventory On-Demand Sourcing (No Stock):If you do not hold any inventory and only purchase from your supplier after an order comes in, it usually takes 2–4 days for the supplier to ship the goods to my Foshan warehouse. Plus inbound inspection time, the total delivery time must add an extra 2–4 days on top of the logistics transit time.
MR. TAN’s Practical Advice: Implement a “Micro-Inventory” Strategy
Dropshipping does not mean you have to tie up hundreds of thousands of dollars in inventory like traditional traders. Based on your sales trends, even if you only stock single-digit inventory (such as 3–5 pieces) per SKU in my warehouse initially, the capital required is only a few tens of dollars, but it cleanly eliminates the 2–4 days of domestic sourcing delay, giving your Italian buyers a much faster fulfillment experience.
5. Cooperation Rules and Service Boundaries (Laying Out the Ground Rules Upfront)
In operating our dropshipping fulfillment services, we have our own baseline principles. If you are interested in working with us, please review the following two terms:
1. We Refuse Replicas and Counterfeit/Infringing Products
Special statement: We do not accept any dropshipping fulfillment services for replicas, counterfeits, or infringing branded products.
To protect the parcel safety of all legitimate sellers, meet the strict compliance requirements of our logistics service providers, and account for various risks, we completely prohibit all counterfeit business. Stating this upfront avoids wasting each other’s communication time.
2. Transparent and Minimal Order Processing Service Fees
We primarily earn a transparent and reasonable fee for product inspection and fulfillment. Order service fees are charged on a tiered scale based on order volume, starting as low as $1.19 per order. If you would like to see the detailed service fee tier chart for different order volumes, feel free to message me privately anytime.
We do not make markups on product sourcing, international freight, or packaging materials. this is our promise and our baseline!
